Mrs. Field’s Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies (a.k.a. “Spite Cookies”)
| 2 cups sugar | 2 tsp vanilla extract | 1 package of milk chocolate chips |
| 2 cups brown sugar | 1 tsp salt | 5½ - 6 cups flour |
| 1½ cups butter | 2 tsp baking powder | 4 eggs |
| 1 cup shortening | 2 tsp baking soda |
The full recipe makes 8 dozen (since it came from a bakery), so you’ll likely want to half or even quarter it.
Instructions
- Cream the brown sugar, sugar, shortening, and butter (In a shortening shortage, you can use 2 cups butter or margarine)
- Add the eggs and vanilla
- Mix in salt, baking powder, and baking soda
- Add the flour and combine thoroughly
- Stir in the chocolate chips
- Bake at 400 degrees for 7 minutes
- Note: They won’t look done, but if the bottoms are a little brown, then they’re done.
What’s with the nickname “Spite Cookies”?
Well, there’s a fun story here! One day, Mrs. Field was at a bakery. She had some of their oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, and they were some of the best cookies she’s ever had. So, she asked the owner if she could have the recipe. The owner was very kind and said something along the lines of “of course! Just write down your name and information so we know who has it, and the recipe is yours.” She did so, and went home very happy. She even baked some for her close friends and family just a few days later. Everything seemed fine and dandy until 2 weeks later, she received an invoice in the mail for TWO HUNDRED US DOLLARS. Adjusting for inflation, in 2023 that’d be around $2,500USD. She was FURIOUS. They had not told her that they would charge her. Especially not such a large sum of money. So, out of spite, she shared the recipe with EVERYONE SHE KNEW. Now, you too can copy and share this recipe with your friends to help avenge Mrs. Field 😂
